Prayer: Why, How, When, Effectiveness & Promises of
Why should we pray?
John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.
Jesus is your friend. What do you do with your friends? Spend time together, talk to friends, communicate.
Jesus is your friend, He wants you to spend time with Him by talking to Him, by praying to Him. To be in relationship with Him we need to pray to Him.
We are all sinners…we were all born into sin…we inherited sin.
James 4:17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.
We sin every day.
1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
Sin separates us from God, but…
1 John 1: 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. – We need daily cleansing!
Why else should we pray? Because it works. All believers have had very specific prayers answered, I certainly have.
More can be done by prayer than anything else, prayer is our greatest privilege and weapon. Without communication, relationships fail. Prayer keeps us in good relationship/fellowship with God.
How should we pray?
Eph. 6:18 – praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
:18 – supplication = humbleness = surrender ourselves in prayer in the Spirit = with all our heart
:19 = Pray out loud with the spoken word! The spoken word is powerful. We’ve all heard the phrase, “sticks and stones may brake my bones but names will never hurt me”. We know that isn’t true, right? Because we have all been hurt by words said by someone else.
The spoken word is powerful, that’s why we pray out load.
In Jesus’ name:
‘Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.’ – Acts 4:12
“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” – Matthew 28:18
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.” – Rev. 22:13
Pray in the name of Jesus! Jesus is the name above all names. The name of Jesus has power and authority over all things and everyone! Whether they believe in Him or not, the name of Jesus has power and authority over everything and the name of Jesus can pierce through and fix any situation.
John 14:13-14 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.
Sometimes what we want and what we need are two different things. Sometimes we might pray for things that aren’t good for us… don’t expect that prayer to be answered. If your prayer request brings glory and honor to God, it will happen.
Sometimes we need to wait for our prayers to be answered. Sometimes the Lord says “not yet”, so sometimes we need to be patient. But if you trust in the Lord, and your prayer request is legitimate, it will happen.
What should be in our personal prayers?
Praise – Praise God for His greatness, power, righteousness, wisdom, creation, etc.
Silent receiving – Think about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and wait to receive
Confession – Confess your recent sins. Sometimes these are emotional sins, anger, worry, stress
Intercession – Pray blessings for other people
Petition – Ask God for the things you need that will bring honor to Him
Thanksgiving – Give thanks for all of your blessings, friends, family, health, direction, etc.
Give thanks in advance for prayers He will answer.
When should we pray?
James 5:13-16 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.
-When we’re suffering, happy, sad, mad, sick -pray at all times in all occasions
:14-16 = pray for others when they are in need, when others have hardships
:16 – Fervent can be substituted with ‘intense’ or ‘deep’ or ‘focused’.
Who knows what avail means? Avail = Gain! We will gain much through deep, focused prayer.
Again, prayer works.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing.

John 16:23- 24 And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
